It has been my experience the jewellery retail
trade generally work to excessive profit mark-ups. To justify
this the jeweller will point to the value of stock a shop
will need to have invested in. But remember, when you pay
£35+ for a Thomas Sabo Charm, for instance, it will
have cost the jeweller around £10, so, in these tough
economic times, there is a lot of discount to be bartered
before you buy. And when a jewellery retailer offers a free
snowflake charm with every order over £75, not only
is the offer worthless, but it insults your intelligence.
And when a jewellery retailer offers free postage, it is worthless
because you can get free postage from every jewellery retailer.
If they don't offer it already, all you have to do is ask
for it. And when you buy a diamond for £3,000 it will
have cost the diamond dealer around £1,000 or less,
although, diamond dealerships will generally have the diamond
you have requested on trust by their supplier when they show
it to you and, should you decide not to buy, the jeweller
will simply send the diamond back. This is common practise
and means, for you the buyer, there is a great deal of discount
to be negotiated on a diamond. I will publish here shortly
genuine wholesale price lists for diamonds direct from Antwerp.
